What is Reiki

In Chinese or Japanese, the word for Rei is implied either to mean ghost or spirit. Ki or Chi means power or energy. When the two words become one (Reiki) it means ghost power or spirit energy. In the western world, we relate to this term as “Universal Life Energy”.

Long ago , every culture had its own form of natural healing. Due to the renaissance movement, many practices were lost or practiced in secret. Many of the forms of natural healing were and are very similar to each other. One example of a natural form of healing is the use of herbal medicines, which were known to be used throughout the world. For centuries, the Chinese have practiced a form of healing that is based on the Taoist belief. “Within every living thing exists an “essence of life”. This was referred to as Ki or Chi. This Chi comprised both the energy of male and female essence and is referred to as Yin Yang, a philosophy taught by a Chinese philosopher named Lao Tze. Lao Tze believed that without this Chi nothing lives. Essentially, Chi is a universal life energy in which a person draws to maintain life, whether they are conscious of this or not. When a person is not well, a contributing factor or the reason for their illness may be the Chi within them is out of balance. To be well a person needs to have a balanced flow of Chi. Chinese health practitioners determined that if they could stimulate a balanced flow of the Yin Yang energy within the body, they could help a person to be healthy. Thus began acupuncture and the mapping of the meridian points of the human body. The meridian points are the control or focal points of energy flow within the body. When stimulated, they help the flow of Chi to bring the Yin Yang energy into balance.

Like acupuncture and acupressure, Reiki uses the meridian points to stimulate the flow of energy. Reiki is the practice of channeling universal life energy or Ki. It is utilized through a form of hands on healing that involves the practitioner transferring Reiki energy or Ki to you (the recipient). When a practitioner puts his or her hands on someone, the energy flows and directs it self to where it is needed, and continues to flow until there is balance, or energy is no longer required. Because the practitioner is a channel tapping into the universal energy, it is not the practitioner’s energy you are receiving. Therefore, there is no need to worry about depleting the practitioner of energy or about a transfer of negative energy between practitioner and client or vice versa.

Reiki seeks to restore order to the body when vital energy has become unbalanced. Reiki reduces tension and stress, thus promoting a healthier life style allowing peace of mind and enhances the bodies natural ability to heal it self. Reiki is meant to harmonize. The energy tends to go directly to the cause of the ailment. It can relieve all types of physical pain. It combats fatigue, helps clear emotional issues, and can remove creative blocks. It boosts the immune system, raises your energy level and leaves you feeling relaxed and peaceful. Reiki restores health and balance to daily life. Reiki is neither evasive nor manipulative and requires no special clothing or equipment. Reiki is non-denominational, but can be deeply spiritual. Reiki can also reach all levels of the physical, emotional and mental areas of a recipient.

A full Reiki session typically lasts about an hour.
